Post Fire Debris Flow Runout (triple)

This dataset represents modelled runout paths for post-fire debris flows generated using the HydroFire model, specifically simulating scenarios involving triple convergence. In these cases, a single debris flow—linked to a specific headwater catchment via a unique pour point—is modelled as if it were to converge with two additional flows. The model does not assume the origins of the other two flows, instead providing a generalised prediction of how far a debris flow may travel when influenced by triple convergence. This approach enables the assessment of increased runout potential where topographic and hydrological conditions support the interaction of multiple flows.

The HydroFire model has been calibrated and validated using hundreds of observed post-fire debris flows, particularly within the upland forested regions of the Great Dividing Range, including the Alpine region, Central Highlands, and East Gippsland. These areas are characterised by steep slopes, highly weathered Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, and fire-adapted vegetation types prone to high-severity fire. Areas underlain by igneous geology, such as the granite-dominated landscapes of Mt Buffalo, Wilsons Promontory, and parts of the Strathbogie Ranges, have been excluded from modelling due to the low frequency of observed post-fire debris flows in these regions. Likewise, due to a lack of sufficient observational data, runout predictions are not currently provided for the Otways, Strzelecki Ranges, and Grampians.

This dataset is intended to support both emergency response and pre-fire strategic planning. It is most effectively used in conjunction with the companion dataset Post Fire Debris Flow Headwater Catchments, which provides information on the likelihood of debris flow initiation.
